ARE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ALTIFIL?

Typical physical properties of Pyrophyllite are as follows:

    1. Melting Point:           1700oC
    2. Vitrification Point:       cone 8, 1250oC, or cone 15, 1435oC
    3. Specific Gravity:        2.8-2.9 g/cm3
    4. Mohs Hardness:        1-2( 7-8 after 1100oC firing)
    5. Compressive strength:   48.3 Mpa (-300 after 1100oC firing)
    6. Flexural strength:        11.2 Mpa(-40 after 1100oC firing)
    7. Knopp hardness:        57 kg/mm2 for 100g load(600 after 1100oC)
    8. Thermal diffusivity:       0.012 cm2/s(0.004 after 1200oC firing)
    9. Specific Heal:           0.92 J/goC(0.84 after 1200oC firing)
    10. Thermal cond. At 40oC:  2.51 W/moC(0.94 after 1200oC firing)
    11. % Dry Whiteness:       89.6% (94% when fired)
    12. % Dry Brightness:       88%
    13. Oil Absorption:         43%(dependent upon grade)
    14. pH:                   5.6-6.0(inert)

Other Physical Properties of ALTIFIL are as follows:

  • color is usually white, colorless, yellow,
  • lustre is greasy to dull, but pearly on cleavage surfaces.
  • transparency: crystals are mostly translucent to opaque.
  • crystal system is monocline, 2/m and triclinci, bar 1.
  • crystal habits include the typical fine grained, fibrous and lamellar masses, stellate aggregates and radiating spherules. Individual crystal are rare, but usually are tabular subhedral or distorted form.
  • cleavage is perfect in one direction.
  • fracture is uneven or splintery.
  • hardness is 1-1.5 (soft enough to be scratched by a fingernail).
  • specific gravity is approximately 2.65 - 2.85 (average).
  • streak is white
  • other characteristics: cleavage sheets are flexible, but inelastic. A distinctive greasy feel.
  • best field indicators are crystal habit, color, cleavage, softness, aluminum test and feel.

WHERE CAN YOU USE ALTIFIL?
