Refractory Applications

ALTIFIL is a great raw material for Refractory Applications.

  • Contact Refractories and
  • Refractory Mortars

Unlike Talc, ALTIFIL does not flux when heated. This was successfully tested by the Japanese steel industry in the 1960's for making ladle lining refractories.

Testing showed that linings made from Pyrophyllite increased ladle life by over 100%.

ALTIFIL can be used for lining the inner sections of ladles, tun dish and cupola.

At high temperatures ALTIFIL swells and melts to form a glassy surficial coating on the bricks which helps to prevent ingress of molten steel to the interior.

Specifications for this application stipulate that ALTIFIL should have a content of

  • 14-20% Al2O3 and
  • total alkalis under 0.5%
